DC 21 Veterans Day Spotlight – Abel Alvarado

In honor of Veterans Day, we want to highlight one of our members, Abel Alvarado, a glazier and National Guardsman.

Abel was inspired to serve his country as a young child after witnessing the tragic event of 9/11. As an adult, he joined the National Guard, an experience that has been both exciting and challenging, but one of the best decisions he’s ever made.

After meeting a union business representative at a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) event, Abel became a glazier with District Council 21. His experience in the National Guard taught him discipline, loyalty, respect, and willingness to learn, values that have served him well in his union glazing career.

He’s built a career that he enjoys; he gets to do something different every day, and has proven to expand his experience and knowledge within the trade. At the end of a job, he gets to see the final building, knowing that he played a part in its creation.

Abel’s union membership not only provides great benefits like a pension, but also a sense of unity and teamwork, similar to his experience in the military. DC 21 works in the best interest of all their members regardless of position or trade, and Abel knows that the union has his back.

His advice for other veterans? “Just do it. If construction is your interest, you’ll learn everything you need to know through the apprenticeship program and on-the-job training. The opportunities speak for themselves—it’s simply a good job opportunity for the better.”

We thank Abel—and all our members who have served—for their commitment to both our country and our union family. 🇺🇸

Local 252 Honors Leadership at Union Meeting with Levi Canada Award

This week’s Local 252 union meeting was one to remember, with members from across our territory gathering to celebrate milestones and achievements that make our union strong.

We recognized new members taking their oaths, recent graduates receiving their associate’s certificates, and longtime members being honored for their years of service.

The evening’s highlight was the presentation of the Levi Canada Leadership Award to Brother Tito Rosado. This award is given to a member who exemplifies leadership, commitment, and dedication to strengthening the labor movement. Brother Rosado’s contributions have inspired his fellow members and advanced the mission of Local 252.

The night was a true celebration of solidarity, leadership, and the power of our union family. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and we look forward to coming together again at our next meeting.

DC 21 Stands Strong at Tradeswomen Build Nations

District Council 21 was proud to send a delegation of 20 members to this year’s Tradeswomen Build Nations conference in Chicago, the largest gathering of tradeswomen in North America.

Over the course of the weekend, our union sisters connected with members from across the building trades, shared their on-the-job experiences, and strengthened solidarity with workers from every corner of the country.

A highlight of the conference was the powerful Banner Parade, where DC 21 members marched proudly alongside IUPAT sisters and tradeswomen from every union. It was a moving reminder that when we stand together – across trades, locals, and District Councils – we are unstoppable.

Tradeswomen Build Nations is more than a celebration of progress. It’s a commitment to growing our movement, inspiring the next generation of tradeswomen, and ensuring every worker has a voice on the job.

We’re grateful to our delegates who represented DC 21 with pride and leadership this year. We look forward to carrying this momentum into next year’s conference in Houston!
